Pork Tamago
The introduction of canned pork, or SPAM, from the States to Okinawa after World War II resulted in a new style of Okinawan cuisine that is best represented by Pork Tamago (pork and scrambled eggs).
Pork Tamago Onigiri (rice balls), made of Pork Tamago sandwiched in rice and wrapped in nori (seaweed), are available at convenience stores, markets, and Okinawan restaurants. You'll also find this rice ball at convenience stores in Hawaii. It is believed that Okinawan immigrants in Hawaii created it, calling it the SPAM Rice Ball, and then introduced it back to Okinawa. Since then, Pork Tamago has become an integral part of Okinawan food culture. |
