Sushi and Sashimi
Sushi and sashimi are similar dishes, but sushi is served on a small ball of rice, while sashimi is served off a dish of rice or by itself. Eating raw fish is a new concept for a lot of Westerners, but sushi and sashimi are really delicious, and once you get over your fear of the unknown you will find yourself digging in for another bite.

Sushi
You can find sushi served on top of a small ball of rice, known as a nigiri, or sometimes spread out in a mix of types known as chirashi zushi. Sushi is usually a meal of raw seafood, but you can find Westernized sushi in many restaurants, consisting of dishes such as California roll, wrapped in seaweed and served with avocado and tuna. Sushi is a meal of lightly vinegary rice with a slice of raw seafood or egg resting on top, often wrapped in seaweed. Most restaurants serve sushi with a small scoop of wasabi -- lime-green Japanese horseradish paste -- between the fish and rice. This meal can be eaten either as finger food, or you can use chopsticks. When eating sushi, dip the side with the fish into soy sauce and eat it whole. Most sushi is bite-size and intended to be eaten in one bite.

Sashimi
Sashimi is usually served alone or separately placed on the side of a dish of rice.
Sashimi is a Japanese delicacy consisting of raw fish and is often served atop of a bed of thinly sliced white radish and green vegetables, which are intended to be eaten together. A small scoop of wasabi also often sits on the side of the dish. When eating sashimi, use your chopsticks to place a small amount of wasabi onto one of the tiny dishes that comes with your order and mix it with a bit of soy sauce. Next, dip your desired slice of sashimi into the mixture and take a bite. Delicious!
