Tanaga Gumui
Aza Aha, Kunigami Village

This is one of the most refreshing nature experiences Okinawa has to offer. It was named for a species of fresh-water shrimp that once lived in the pond, but unfortunately the species is now extinct. The pond is fed by crystal-clear water cascading through the rocks before entering the deep basin. This feature has made this spot a favorite among sport divers. Unfortunately, falls from slippery rocks claim the lives of numerous divers every year. Due to the pond’s remote location, falls often prove fatal, so we encourage you to enjoy a refreshing dip, but please do not leap.

Directions: From Naha Airport take Highway 58 north towards Nago. Keep left and continue through Kadena Circle. Stay on 58 through Nago and continue past the entrance to Okuma Resort about 5.5 kilometers until you see Route 2. Turn right onto Route 2 and continue through the mountains until you reach Route 70. Turn right onto Route 70 and go about 3.5 kilometers until you see a sign. Turn right onto a small access road. Park beside the road and walk to the falls. Make sure you keep your hands free during the short hike. A rope is available to help you lower yourself down to the pool.
