Japanese Navy Underground HQ
236 Aza Tomishiro, Tomigusuku/Tomishiro City

During the Pacific War, Okinawa was the only major Japanese island to endure a large-scale land battle. The Japanese Navy, led by Rear Adm. Ota, fought a desperate battle defending the island. In the final moments, with his defenses collapsing, Ota sent a telegram to the vice minister of the navy describing how the Okinawan people had given themselves completely in support of the Battle of Okinawa; then he and his men committed suicide.

Many parts of the underground facility still exist in their original condition. Opened to the public in 1970, you can tour several of the tunnels and view the operations room just as it appeared in 1945. When the Okinawans opened the underground facility to the public, their hope was that future generations would see the futility of war and would pursue world peace.
