Nakamura-ke (Nakamura House)
Aza Oshio 106, Kitanakagusuku Village

Nestled in a quaint Okinawan neighborhood rests one of Okinawa’s greatest historical family residences, the Nakamura House. This house was used by Gashi, an ancestor of the Nakamura family, when he relocated here from Zakimi in Yomitan during the 15th century.

This move occurred when Gashi’s pupil, Lord Gosamaru, received an order from the king of Shuri to move to Nakagusuku. Unfortunately, luck for Gosamaru was short lived. Lord Amawari of Katsuren Castle took action against Gosamaru, which caused Gosamaru’s downfall along with that of the Gashi family. Good fortune returned to the Nakamura family in 1720 when, by decree of the royal government in Shuri, one of the family’s ancestors served as jitoshoku (head of the village). It was during this period that the first foundations for the current house were laid.

The Nakamura residence is typical of a rich farmer’s house during this time period and is similar in structure to houses found in mainland Japan between 1185-1572.
