Sougenji Temple Gates
Tomari, Naha City

Sougenji Temple was probably constructed during the reign of King Sho Shin (1477-1562). The wall and two arched gateways remain, but the main hall and other temple buildings were destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Two stone tablets were erected on either side of the gate in 1527, but the left one was destroyed in 1945.

Directions: From Naha Airport take Highway 58 north towards Nago. At the Tomari-Takahashi intersection, turn right towards Shuri Castle. You will see a stone wall on your left. There is some parking available in the lot across from the wall.
