Enhanced services for foreign visitors to Okinawa

The Tourist Information Center, located in Naha City’s Makishi district, has recently been registered as one of the Visit Japan Information Network offices, set up to assist travelers visiting Japan from abroad, offering multi-language services and information on local tourist sites. In association with three other registered offices in the prefecture – the Naha Airport Tourist Information Center, earthtrip and TISCO OKINAWA, it aims to improve foreign visitor-related services in Okinawa.

Naha Marathon opens registration

Applications are now being accepted for the 24th Naha Marathon, scheduled to be held on Dec. 7. The course extends a full 42.195 kilometers, running through Naha and four other municipalities in southern Okinawa. With 260,000 finishers since it was launched in 1985, the Naha Marathon is considered one of the best in Japan. Last year saw the largest-ever number of applicants for the race, with 26,286 signing up to compete.

Uruma City to host international school

An international school is slated to open in 2011 in Enobi, Uruma City, announced Governor of Okinawa Hirokazu Nakaima, Uruma City Mayor Hisao Chinen and president of Tokyo-based publisher Obunsha Co., Ltd. Fumio Akao at a press conference on July 25.

The King of Okinawan Rock Returns

The Vietnam War, U.S. military bases, a local economy that depended on the bases and the bands playing for U.S. servicemen particularly around Koza city… it was against this historic backdrop in the Okinawa of the 1970s that the distinctive style of rock music, eventually to be known as “Okinawan rock”, was developed. Murasaki emerged as the leading figure in that Koza music scene and soon their name became known nationwide with the two monster albums each of which sold over 40,000 copies. The band was comprised of the keyboardist George Murasaki and Shiroma brothers, joined later by the drummer Eiich Miyanaga. Although it broke up only two years after the dramatic debut in mainland Japan, the band definitely left its mark on the Japanese rock scene.
