By Takeshi Yokokawa
January 15, 2004 (Thu)
An annual kimono sale is coming to Ryubo, also known as Palette Kumoji, in Naha City Jan. 20 (Tues.)-26 (Mon.) from 10:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m. One of Ryubo’s most popular events, the sale draws kimono lovers and collectors from all over the island. Fans of this annual event – many of whom would prefer to keep the sale a secret -- are looking forward to the must-see offerings and bargains to be had as there is no other place on Okinawa where you can find such a large selection of inexpensive and affordable kimonos and accessories.

Ladies’ kimonos start at ¥3,900, and a half-coat called a haori runs from ¥750. You can also purchase a gorgeous kimono belt known as an obi from ¥3,900. All kimonos are produced in mainland Japan and are shipped to Ryubo specifically for the sale. A wide variety of kimono remnants are also available from ¥100, useful for home decoration, gifts and souvenirs. If you have a flair for sewing, you can make coin purses, drawstring bags, business-card cases, coasters and even costumes for traditional Japanese dolls from these lovely remnants. Antique jewelry and watches as well as bags are also sold at the sale.

Ryubo, one of Naha City’s landmarks, is a general department store hosting restaurants, a movie theater, a civic theater, an art gallery, a museum and an event hall. The kimono sale will be held on Ryubo’s sixth floor; U.S. dollars will be accepted. There are plenty of parking spaces in the basement as well as near Okinawa City Hall. If you use the Okinawa Urban Monorail, get off at Kencho-mae Station, where a walkway will take you to the store’s second floor. For more information, call Ryubo at 098-867-1171 or visit http://www.palette-kumoji.co.jp/.

Directions: From Tomari in Naha City, take Route 58 towards Naha Airport. Turn left at the Kumoji intersection and cross Onari Bridge. Ryubo will be on the right.
